GaveFabrikken
Product development in partnership with GaveFabrikken
GaveFabrikken (GiftFactory) develops advanced electronics products in collaboration with Tobias Jacobsen, and the designer’s name is used to brand the joint product line. With the delivery of 600,000 corporate Christmas gifts a year, GaveFabrikken is Denmark’s leading supplier in this field.
About his partnership with GaveFabrikken Tobias Jacobsen says:
‘Our joint product development process always begins with a focus on idea and form. I strive for a simple and stringent expression but also try to identify a particular product detail that can enhance the product’s sculptural expression and functional qualities. A product aspect or feature that I can elaborate and highlight. That adds a sculptural quality to the simple and stringent look and provides a sense of owning something refined and unique – like a piece of jewellery.
When I work on an idea, I look for story and personality. In that process, a nickname often presents itself – either to GaveFabrikken or to me. While it is on the drawing table, every product has a name that reflects its form or a unique detail and guides my sketching process.
We developed an air purifier, which was given the working title Mosaic. The compact Bluetooth speakers derived their particular round expression from their working title, The Little Barrels.
A radio for Zeniq was directly inspired by the Hong Kong skyline. On my first backpacking trip, I was fascinated with a black, rectilinear skyscraper with a sloping roof. The perfect form for a stringent radio design with a practical sloping user interface. The radio became the most popular corporate Christmas gift that year.
Design should never dominate. Good design and attention to detail should provide an immediate sense of quality. In my collaboration with GaveFabrikken, everything begins with form and the personality of the product.’
