Fashion For Home

The German furniture company Fashion For Home asked me to design a light, beautiful and affordable chair based on an existing rectangular veneer shell. For me, everything begins with form, and since I have always been fascinated with the shape and expression of musical instruments – particularly string instruments – I decided to draw inspiration from the beautiful curvature of the violin as I created the ‘Vio’ line. In addition to minimizing the price tag, I sought to make the chair inviting and interesting in both use and appearance by giving it a curvy back and a light expression. I also added padding to make it both comfortable as well as beautiful. Fashion For Home also wanted to include a table in the series. This solution became similarly minimalistic with a tabletop and light trestle legs. I use the tables in my own home and the slender legs almost seem to make the table float above the floor – an expression I am particularly fond of.

The German furniture company Fashion For Home wanted a modular cabinet design with drawers and closets based on a simple, functional wooden box. I chose to make the cube form a prominent feature and to turn the leg into the significant detail that adds character to the design. I continually collect and store shapes in a mental archive, and during the sketching process, a childhood memory popped up. My mother had given me a boomerang and explained how it always returned to the thrower. I went down to the sea, threw the boomerang – and never saw it again! With the cabinet design I sought to reclaim my boomerang through the bent shape of the leg, which also makes the heavy piece of furniture float slightly. In order to allow the leg to define the design expression without distracting details, I used a gripless, automatic closure mechanism.
