Chubby Lamp

Japan is the main source of inspiration for my designs, whether in textiles, ceramic or metal. One of my favourite Japanese objects is the lacquerware bowl for miso soup. The delicate wooden bowls are turned to perfection and then coated with lacquer in a craft tradition called shikki. The design of my Chubby Lamp was inspired by a childhood memory of a red lacquerware bowl. As a boy, I used to visit my grandfather in his home in Søholm, and I still remember climbing the stairs to the living room with the fireplace and seeing the red lacquerware bowl on the coffee table. When I opened the lid, there were sweets inside, perhaps intended for me. In Chubby Lamp, I have sought to bring out the same aesthetic and form and the same feeling in my fingertips, in a nod to my memories of my grandfather and our shared fascination with Japanese lacquerware.

Another important goal was to make a lamp that does not have a technical expression. Most lamps have certain fixed elements, including a rod, reflectors and so forth. My goal was to design a lamp that does not look like a lamp when it is off but appears more as a sculpture. An object that arouses curiosity and engages playfully way with organic forms and expressions. I began with a rectangular base that rises up and gradually transitions into a round, chubby form. It took a long time to find the right balance and arrive at a form that is attractively chubby without being chunky. The same kind of balance I admire in Japanese lacquerware bowls.

LEDs and cordless technology make it possible to move the Chubby Lamp around and place it where it is needed, whether indoors or out – a cosy light on a shelf, a bright spot at a cocktail party or a warm glow on the garden table.
